Council Meeting Highlights - October 22, 2024

Organizational Meeting
Council held their organizational meeting where Robert Willing was elected as Reeve and Sandra Eastman as Deputy Reeve. Council also set council meeting dates, reviewed the remuneration schedule and appointed Councilors to various committees. Council also adopted its newly developed vision statement “Progressive. Prosperous. Peaceful” and mission statement “Providing accountable leadership for exceptional quality of life.”

Meeting with Neighboring Municipalities
Council made a motion to authorize all council members and the CAO to attend the tri-council meeting on November 20, 2024, which includes councillors and CAOs from the MD of Fairview, MD of Peace, and the County of Clear Hills. This meeting allows for collaboration and for councillors to discuss topics of mutual interest.

Alberta Pond Hockey Volunteer Board Member
Council approved a request from the Alberta Pond Hockey Association seeking volunteer board members for a one-year term. During the Organizational Meeting, Councillor Theresa Johnson was designated to represent the MD on the committee.

Christmas Social Events
Council discussed their annual Christmas Social, scheduled for December 2, 2024, in collaboration with the County of Northern Lights and Northern Sunrise County. The event will take place at the MD office starting at 5 PM. Administration also shared plans for the MD of Peace staff Christmas social event. 

Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board Update
Misty Velichka, the Economic Development Officer for the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board (LCREDB), provided the council with an update on the board's recent initiatives. She highlighted enhanced social media engagement, the unveiling of their new website, laccardinal.com, and she showcased a promotional video LCREDB created to help promote the region. The LCREDB board includes members from Grimshaw, Berwyn, and the MD of Peace. 

Intermunicipal Development Referral 
Council reviewed amendments to the Town of Peace River Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan and directed Administration to inform the Town of Peace River that the MD of Peace has no comments or concerns regarding the proposed amendments.

Administrative Policies
Council reviewed and approved updates and amendments to the following administrative policies:

  • ADM-32 Purchasing Policy
  • ADM-33 EFT and Cheque Payment Lists

Lac Cardinal Recreation Area Signage
Council voted on the location for the Lac Cardinal Recreation Area signage to be erected.
