Fire Permits
The Municipal District of Peace No.135 requires Fire Permits as per Fire Protection Bylaw No. 8/2023.  If your burn will be located within 1/2 mile of a numbered highway, you will need smoke signs posted. Call Alberta Transportation at 780-624-6280 or LaPrairie Grimshaw at 780-332-4452 for signage. It is recommended that a water source be available at the burn site as well.

MD of Peace No. 135 Open Air Burning Permit

This permit is issued under the authority of the Municipal District of Peace No. 135's “Fire Services Bylaw”, and in accordance with the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and Regulations. A burning permit is required unless listed as an exemption under Section 8 of "Fire Services Bylaw 8/2023".

Section 2 - Precautions

Do you understand your obligations under the MD of Peace No. 135's Fire Protection Bylaw?
Do you understand your obligations under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and Regulations?
Do you own the lot or parcel of land as herein described?
Have you ensured that adequate clearance has been provided from readily combustible materials?
Is the material to be burned a minimum of 10 metres away from structures and property lines?
Will the appropriate amount of fire extinguishing equipment, capable of controlling the fire be on site for the duration of the burn?
Have precautions been taken to assure the burn's confinement, intensity and size, and to not create a smoke nuisance or hazard to neighboring properties, persons, roadways or traffic?

Section 3 Permit Holders Obligations & Acknowledgements

  1. This permit is not valid until approved by a MD of Peace Fire Guardian or Designate and a permit number, date issued, and permit expiry date are written in the top right hand corner. If a site inspection is required, additional conditions may be imposed which the permit holder agrees to adhere to. 
  2. This permit must be retained by the permit holder, who must be able to produce it upon the request of an authorized officer at any time during the duration of the fire. Failure to retain this permit will be deemed to be a breach of the conditions of the permit. 
  3. At the time of the burning, air temperature shall not exceed 25 degrees Celsius, relative humidity shall not be below 25% and wind speed (including gusts) shall not exceed 15 KPH. 
  4. If the fire referred to in this permit becomes out of control, requiring the Fire Department (either the MD's Fire Department, one of the MD's mutual aid partners, or Alberta Wildfire) to respond, the permit holder will be invoiced for that response at the rates listed in the MD's "Fees and Charges" Bylaw. 
  5. If the location of the proposed burn is within one half mile of a numbered highway (Highway 2 or Highway 684) then the permit holder MUST arrange for the Provincial Highway Maintenance Contractor (La Prairie Works Inc.) to install appropriate "smoke ahead" signage prior to the ignition of the proposed burn.

Section 4 - Applicant's Signature and MD Authorization

I verify that the information given on this permit application is correct and a clear representation of the facts pertaining to the proposed burn at the location stated herein. Additionally, I verify that I have read and understand the conditions on this permit and accept full responsibility for any consequences that may arise as a result of the burn referred to in this permit. Further, I verify that I will adhere to any additional conditions applied to this permit by a MD Fire Guardian.
