George W. Veidt Family (1911 - 2026)

In 1911, George W. Veidt, purchased two half-section scrips from a couple of Boer War veterans.

He started farming with a team of horses, then purchased a tractor and separator, and later, in 1928, a combine, which was one of the first combines to arrive in Western Canada. That same year, he met and married Bertha Pohl. They had 6 children: Helen, Dorothy, George, Charles, William, and Victor. With a growing family, George built a larger house in 1935.

In 1946, George Sr. passed away, leaving Bertha to raise 6 children, run a household, and operate a farm. The children all helped out, and they got through those tough years.

William took over the farm in 1960. He met and married Joan Mears, and together they farmed grain and raised Simmental cattle. They had three children: Sheila, Brian, and Lisa. Grandchildren followed: Chelsea, and Thomas; Andrea, Marissa, and Carolyn; and Sarah, Liam, and Noah.

In 2014, Terry and Chelsea purchased the subdivided acreage, which is part of the original homestead. They do not have enough land to farm grain or raise cattle, but farm in their way, with what they have. In 2018, they started a small-scale market garden called TC Ranch to grow vegetables for their CSA program, Farmers Markets, and farm-gate sales. Terry and Chelsea, along with their children, Emma and Luke, still live in the house that George Sr. built in 1935!

Bill and Joan Veidt have both passed. Sheila, Brian,

and Lisa now own one of the quarters of land.

There is an old granary on the property that was built in 1912 and has signatures from many people in the family, including George Veidt Sr. Unfortunately, the foundation is starting to fall apart, so it may not be around much longer.
